Technical Meetings

The technical meetings are a monthly event, that aims to provide the Birmingham Perl community with an educational night of talks. If you wish to attend, please feel free to come along and listen in.

Talks Wanted: If you would like to do a talk, whether a 5 minute lightning talk, a 15 minutes talk or longer, please let us know and we'll add you to the schedule. If we are unable to add you to the schedule for the next meeting, we will give you priority at a future meeting.

Guest Speakers: Are you visiting Birmingham at some point in the future, and would be willing to give a talk? Or are you based outside of the West Midlands, but would be willing to make a trek over to see us and present a talk? If so, then I'd love to hear from you. Drop me an email with details of when you are in Birmingham and the talk you would like to present. I'll then arrange a schedule and confirm.

The Talks

Mike Kemp * - Into the Black: Exploring North Korea (or, how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb)

Abstract:

North Korea scares people.

Allegedly DPRK has a super l33t squad of killer haxor ninjas that regularly engage in hit and run hacks against the US Defense department, South Korea, or anyone else who pisses off the Glorious Leader. DPRK also has no real Internet infrastructure to speak of (as dictators don"t like unrestricted information), although it does have a number of IP blocks (unused?).

This talk examines some of the myths about DPRK, and some of their existing and emerging technologies.as well as some of the available infrastructure associated with DPRK (funnily enough some of which is in South Korea and Japan) and explores the potential technical threats posed by a pernicious regime, as well as exposing some of the huge gaps in logic that have led to the world potentially engaging in chicken little syndrome when it comes to DPRK (and indeed, the whole concept of "Information Warfare"). No 0days will be demonstrated, however this talk will discuss some new information that hasn't yet been made public.
