Technical Meetings

The technical meetings are a monthly event, that aims to provide the Birmingham Perl community with an educational night of talks. If you wish to attend, please feel free to come along and listen in.

Talks Wanted: If you would like to do a talk, whether a 5 minute lightning talk, a 15 minutes talk or longer, please let us know and we'll add you to the schedule. If we are unable to add you to the schedule for the next meeting, we will give you priority at a future meeting.

Guest Speakers: Are you visiting Birmingham at some point in the future, and would be willing to give a talk? Or are you based outside of the West Midlands, but would be willing to make a trek over to see us and present a talk? If so, then I'd love to hear from you. Drop me an email with details of when you are in Birmingham and the talk you would like to present. I'll then arrange a schedule and confirm.

The Talks

Marty Pauley * - GNU Guerilla

Abstract:

Marty is a notable member of the Perl community and Belfast.pm, who will speak on just about anything given half a chance. Both an animated and entertaining speaker, as his talk on Free Software Evangelism proves.

Often the best way to convince someone that Free Software systems can solve their problems is to install them before they can stop you! But you must be careful: "one man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist". This short talk will describe some real world GNU Guerilla experiences and provide tips for success. If you really want to use Free Software in your workplace, but cannot convince your boss, I hope this talk will help.

Abstract:

Phrasebooks are a part of life. When travelling from country to country, a handy phrasebook can be a lifesaver in getting yourself understood. The same is true of computing. Having a phrasebook to translate error codes to meaningful descriptions or websites text into specific languages can save a lot of time and effort for the programmer and user.
